Juvenile Lithic Proportion Percent

Pool observed juvenile/lithic clast counts using a classified denominator and retain unclassified coverage separately; count proportions are not mass or volume proportions.

Description

Juvenile clasts derive from erupting magma, while lithic clasts represent older rock.

Juvenile clasts derive from erupting magma, while lithic clasts represent older rock. Unclassified material affects coverage but is outside the classified denominator.

Pool observed juvenile/lithic clast counts using a classified denominator and retain unclassified coverage separately; count proportions are not mass or volume proportions.

When to use Juvenile Lithic Proportion Percent

Use this tool to pool observed juvenile/lithic clast counts using a classified denominator and retain unclassified coverage separately; count proportions are not mass or volume proportions.

Gather the relevant observations and fitted model parameters. Use the stated units and time basis; keep paired observations aligned.

How to use Juvenile Lithic Proportion Percent and understand its results

  1. Gather the relevant observations and fitted model parameters. Use the stated units and time basis; keep paired observations aligned.
  2. Enter juvenileCounts, lithicCounts, unclassifiedCounts using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read juvenilePercentOfClassified, lithicPercentOfClassified, unclassifiedPercentOfAll. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

unclassifiedCountsUnclassified countslist of numberRequired

Align nonnegative integer juvenile, lithic and unclassified counts. Pool counts, require at least one classified clast, and report juvenile/lithic percentages plus unclassified share of all clasts.1

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

juvenile percent = 100 × juvenile/(juvenile + lithic)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Number proportions do not imply mass or volume proportions; sampling and classification remain caller responsibilities.

Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Fragmentation Index Percent: Measure fine-fragment mass share at an explicit phi sieve boundary; higher phi means smaller clasts, and the result is a grain-size proxy rather than magma fragmentation efficiency. For a complementary task, use DRE To Tephra Volume Conversion: Convert declared whole-deposit DRE to bulk tephra volume by mass conservation, splitting supplied juvenile/lithic mass share; packing, vesicles and interclast pores are already embodied in measured bulk density.
