Hazard Zone Radius Population Exposure Calculator
Audit independently mapped population-weighted overlap fractions for caller documented zone, NOT area-fraction→population assumption, geodesy mapping or recommended exclusion radius. Caller independently establishes units, regime, calibration and applicability; this does not establish design-code compliance, authenticity, operational safety, treatment efficacy or a validated forecast.
Description
Population exposure within a documented hazard zone requires a population distribution and mapped overlap.
Population exposure within a documented hazard zone requires a population distribution and mapped overlap.1
This calculator combines already established exposure fractions and records how much population remains unassessed.
When to use Hazard Zone Radius Population Exposure Calculator
Use this tool when you need to reproduce the stated calculation from measured records or independently selected model inputs. Prepare matched observations and independently established site, specimen, units, datum, and calibration context.
How to use Hazard Zone Radius Population Exposure Calculator and understand its results
- Prepare matched observations and independently established site, specimen, units, datum, and calibration context.
- Enter callerAlreadyMappedZonePopulationCounts, callerIndependentlyComputedPopulationExposureFractions, knownExposureGeometryFlags, callerDocumentedNominalHazardRadiusM, following the field table and rules below, then run the tool.
- Read knownExposedPopulationEquivalent, unassessedPopulationCount, documentedNominalRadiusM. Use the output meanings below to interpret units, signs, flags, and any nested result fields.
- Correct reported input issues and run again. For a successful result, check the stated evidence coverage and assumptions before using it in your review.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| callerAlreadyMappedZonePopulationCounts | Caller already mapped zone population counts | list of number | Required |
| callerIndependentlyComputedPopulationExposureFractions | Caller independently computed population exposure fractions | list of number | Required |
| knownExposureGeometryFlags | Known exposure geometry flags | list of number | Required |
| callerDocumentedNominalHazardRadiusM | Caller documented nominal hazard radius m | number | Required |
Use aligned nonempty nonnegative integer populations, fractions from zero to one, and binary geometry-known flags. Sum population times exposure fraction only for known entries. Sum entire populations for unknown entries. A nonnegative nominal radius in metres is returned unchanged; it is not used to derive overlap.
knownExposure=Σ(known_i×population_i×fraction_i); unassessed=Σ((1−known_i)×population_i) Symbols follow the input and output meanings and the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| knownExposedPopulationEquivalent | Known exposed population equivalent | number |
| unassessedPopulationCount | Unassessed population count | number |
| documentedNominalRadiusM | Documented nominal radius m | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Interpretation requires independently matched observations, units, site or specimen, and calibration. The calculation does not establish geological identity, operating safety, or an eruption forecast.
Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types, and violated calculation rules are input issues. Numeric values must be finite; nonfinite results are rejected. Evidence arrays must be dense, with no missing cells. Numeric observation lists allow at most 10,000 entries, subject to any smaller bounds stated above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
For a related review, use Volcanic Debris Avalanche Volume Calculator: A mapped avalanche deposit can vary in thickness across its footprint. Cell areas and lower and upper thickness estimates preserve a volume interval instead of assuming one uniform slab. For a complementary step, use CO2 Tree Kill Zone Diameter Health Checker: A tree-condition survey can quantify affected area while recording whether coincident CO₂ measurements exist. An equivalent circular diameter summarizes that area without implying that the mapped footprint is circular or that CO₂ caused the damage.
