Berry Average Weight From Sample

Pool counted berry subsamples with independent container tare and unequal berry denominators; not a variety average or equal-sample mean.

Description

A berry-weight sample includes its container unless tare is removed.

A berry-weight sample includes its container unless tare is removed. Pooled berry weight uses total net mass divided by total counted berries.

Pool counted berry subsamples with independent container tare and unequal berry denominators; not a variety average or equal-sample mean.

When to use Berry Average Weight From Sample

Use this tool to pool counted berry subsamples with independent container tare and unequal berry denominators; not a variety average or equal-sample mean.

Prepare vineyard measurements, dates or block records for the intended growing period. Keep weights, counts and weather observations in the stated units.

How to use Berry Average Weight From Sample and understand its results

  1. Prepare vineyard measurements, dates or block records for the intended growing period. Keep weights, counts and weather observations in the stated units.
  2. Enter berrySampleMassesGrams, sampleBerryCounts, sampleContainerTaresGrams using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read netBerrySampleMassesGrams, pooledObservedBerryMassGrams, perSampleBerryMassGrams. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement

sampleBerryCountsSample berry countslist of numberRequired
sampleContainerTaresGramsSample container tares gramslist of numberRequired

Align nonnegative gross masses and tares with positive integer berry counts. Reject tare above gross. Return net sample masses, local means and the pooled mean.1

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

pooled grams/berry = Σ(gross sample − tare)/Σ berry counts

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

The pooled result is not an equal-sample mean or a variety-wide average.

Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Sample Bunch Weight Scaling Tonnage: Scale stratified measured bunch mass using caller known sample inclusion probabilities and actual represented bunch counts, explicitly Hájek weighted mean; not equal-weight count method, exact unbiased population total or random-sample claim. For a complementary task, use Berries Per Cluster Average Count: Count all observed mature/small berries by cluster and retain abortion-opportunity fruit-set denominator; no inferred original flowers from surviving berries or disease diagnosis.
