Heading Step Consistency Checker
Audit actual hierarchy adjacent ratios under caller scale and tolerance, retaining reversals/equal sizes; differs from generating an ideal modular scale.
Description
Adjacent heading-size ratios describe a measured hierarchy.
Adjacent heading-size ratios describe a measured hierarchy. Consistency with a target scale differs from generating an ideal hierarchy.1
Enter at least two positive sizes in hierarchy order, positive target and nonnegative relative tolerance. Return ratios, inconsistent pair indices and strict-descending flag requiring every ratio>1.
When to use Heading Step Consistency Checker
Use Heading Step Consistency Checker when you need to evaluate the supplied records under the calculation and evidence rules below. Input reversals and equal sizes are retained for review. No ideal scale is generated.
Prepare measured font or typeset-layout values and the explicit design policy requested. For text or font bytes, use the supported syntax explained below.
How to use Heading Step Consistency Checker and understand its results
- Prepare measured font or typeset-layout values and the explicit design policy requested. For text or font bytes, use the supported syntax explained below.
- Enter headingSizesDescendingPx, callerTargetStepRatio, callerRelativeRatioTolerance using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read adjacentHeadingStepRatios, inconsistentStepIndices, strictDescendingHierarchy. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| headingSizesDescendingPx | Heading sizes descending px | list of number | Required |
| callerTargetStepRatio | Caller target step ratio | number | Required |
| callerRelativeRatioTolerance | Caller relative ratio tolerance | number | Required |
Enter at least two positive sizes in hierarchy order, positive target and nonnegative relative tolerance. Return ratios, inconsistent pair indices and strict-descending flag requiring every ratio>1.
ratio=previousSize/nextSize; inconsistent if abs(ratio/target−1)>tolerance Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| adjacentHeadingStepRatios | Adjacent heading step ratios | list of number |
| inconsistentStepIndices | Inconsistent step indices | list of number |
| strictDescendingHierarchy | Strict descending hierarchy | boolean |

Input reversals and equal sizes are retained for review. No ideal scale is generated.
Numeric inputs, where present, must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 10,000 entries; string lists to 128 strings of at most 128 characters each. The rules above may impose smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Type Scale Token Naming Export: Named type-scale tokens export measured design choices as CSS custom properties. Naming policy should be explicit and stable. For a complementary task, use CSS clamp() Min/Preferred/Max Builder: Fluid font sizing interpolates between chosen viewport endpoints and clamps at font-size endpoints. rem representation depends on the supplied root size.
