NOAEL to RfD Converter
Apply supplied assessment factors and exposure-duration adjustment to a NOAEL; this arithmetic derives a candidate reference dose, not an authoritative safe intake.
Description
Apply caller-supplied uncertainty factors and a duration fraction to a NOAEL-based reference-dose calculation.
A no observed adverse effect level, or NOAEL, is an experimental dose selected from a study. A reference-dose assessment uses a point of departure together with uncertainty considerations to develop a benchmark for an exposure scenario. Selecting the evidence and factors requires toxicological judgment.1
This tool performs the arithmetic after those choices have been made. It multiplies the NOAEL by a supplied duration-adjustment fraction and divides by the product of your uncertainty factors. The intermediate adjusted point of departure and composite factor remain visible.
Dose inputs and outputs use mg/kg/day. The resulting value is a candidate reference dose under your assumptions, rather than an authoritative exposure limit or an individualized safe intake.
When to use NOAEL to RfD Converter
Use it to document how a specified NOAEL, adjustment fraction, and set of assessment factors produce a candidate reference value, or compare arithmetic scenarios with the same evidence base.
How to use NOAEL to RfD Converter and interpret its calculation
- Enter a positive noaelMgPerKgDay appropriate to the endpoint and exposure basis.
- Enter a nonempty uncertaintyFactors list with every factor at least one, and durationAdjustmentFraction greater than zero and no greater than one.
- Run the calculation and review compositeUncertaintyFactor, adjustedPointOfDepartureMgPerKgDay, and derivedReferenceDoseMgPerKgDay together.
UF = product of supplied factors; adjusted POD = NOAEL × duration fraction; candidate RfD = adjusted POD / UF The duration fraction multiplies the dose; factors multiply together rather than being added.
The implementation imposes no preferred set of factors and does not deduplicate repeated factors. Enter each intended factor once and record the rationale outside the calculator.

Limitations and assumptions
It does not select a critical study, identify a NOAEL, justify factors, convert a LOAEL, or establish whether linear duration adjustment is suitable for the endpoint.
There is no route-to-route, species, body-mass, or bioavailability adjustment beyond the explicitly supplied numbers. Arithmetic agreement does not validate the scientific assessment.
Alternative or Complementary methods
A benchmark dose can provide a model-based point of departure instead of a tested NOAEL. A hazard quotient is a later comparison of compatible exposure with an independently justified reference dose.
