Dermal Absorption Dose
Integrate supplied dermal contact loadings, distinct contact areas and absorbed fractions into mass-normalized dose; overlapping contact areas and time integration must be resolved externally.
Description
Sum absorbed dermal contact masses and divide by body mass to obtain an event dose in mg/kg.
Dermal exposure distinguishes material contacting the skin from the portion absorbed. Surface loading expresses mass per area, while an absorption fraction represents the assumed proportion crossing the skin under a specified scenario. Those inputs need an evidence-based exposure definition.1
This tool treats each entry as a contact segment: loading in mg/cm², area in cm², and a fraction from zero to one. It reports absorbed mass for each segment in mg and their total divided by body mass in kg. The resulting mg/kg is an amount per body mass, without an automatic daily time basis.
When to use Dermal Absorption Dose
Use it for a contact-event worksheet with specified surface loading and absorption, or compare contributions from different contact regions or materials.
How to use Dermal Absorption Dose and understand its results
- Enter aligned, nonempty contactMassMgPerSquareCm, contactAreasSquareCm, and absorbedFractions arrays. Loading and area may be zero; fractions must be between zero and one.
- Enter positive bodyMassKg and ensure each segment represents a separate intended contribution without double counting.
- Run the calculation and inspect segmentAbsorbedMassMg and absorbedDoseMgPerKg. Add an explicit exposure-duration basis separately if needed.
absorbed mass_i = loading_i × area_i × fraction_i; absorbed dose = Σ absorbed mass_i / body mass Fractions multiply contacting mass; the calculator does not infer absorption from a permeability coefficient.

Limitations and assumptions
No time-dependent diffusion, washing, occlusion, skin condition, formulation, or permeability fitting is modeled. Enter loading of the chemical of interest rather than bulk material unless appropriately converted.
The result does not establish health risk. Any comparison with a daily reference dose requires compatible time and absorbed-versus-administered dose definitions.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Estimate permeability through a suitable calibrated model when that is the missing parameter. A route aggregation tool can combine separately prepared route amounts after checking that they share an exposure basis.
