Stage Sound Sync Delay
Calculate the sound-delay adjustment needed to reach a caller-defined audiovisual offset.
Description
Audiovisual synchronization uses an explicit sign convention: sound arrival minus visual arrival.
Audiovisual synchronization uses an explicit sign convention: sound arrival minus visual arrival. A desired offset may differ from exact simultaneity.1
Calculate the sound-delay adjustment needed to reach a caller-defined audiovisual offset.
When to use Stage Sound Sync Delay
Use this tool to calculate the sound-delay adjustment needed to reach a caller-defined audiovisual offset.
Prepare the measurements or record lists for the intended production, performer, cohort or planning period. Confirm units, shared time/coordinate conventions and supplied targets.
How to use Stage Sound Sync Delay and understand its results
- Prepare the measurements or record lists for the intended production, performer, cohort or planning period. Confirm units, shared time/coordinate conventions and supplied targets.
- Enter soundArrivalMilliseconds, visualArrivalMilliseconds, targetSoundOffsetMilliseconds using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read observedSoundOffsetMilliseconds, requiredSoundDelayAdjustmentMilliseconds. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| soundArrivalMilliseconds | Sound arrival time | number | Required |
| visualArrivalMilliseconds | Visual arrival time | number | Required |
| targetSoundOffsetMilliseconds | Target sound offset | number | Required |
Enter finite sound/visual arrival times in milliseconds on one clock and the target signed sound offset. Return observed offset and required signed adjustment. Positive adjustment calls for later sound; negative adjustment calls for advancing sound or reducing an existing delay.
observedOffset=soundArrival−visualArrival; requiredAdjustment=targetOffset−observedOffset Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| observedSoundOffsetMilliseconds | Observed sound offset | number |
| requiredSoundDelayAdjustmentMilliseconds | Required sound-delay adjustment | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
The tool does not measure arrivals or configure equipment. A negative requested adjustment may be unavailable on a delay-only device; propagation, processing and visual latency must be represented in the supplied arrival times.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Surtitle Timing: Measure surtitle cue timing offsets against spoken cues. For a complementary task, use Vocal Range Transposition Check: Transpose a MIDI-note range and test it against a supplied performer range.
