GRAT Remainder Value

Model a GRAT taxable remainder from caller-supplied annuity and discount assumptions.

Description

A retained-annuity model discounts end-of-year payments before subtracting their value from a contribution.

A retained-annuity model discounts end-of-year payments before subtracting their value from a contribution. This calculator uses an ordinary-annuity formula rather than a complete GRAT actuarial valuation.1

Model a GRAT taxable remainder from caller-supplied annuity and discount assumptions.

When to use GRAT Remainder Value

Use this tool to model a GRAT taxable remainder from caller-supplied annuity and discount assumptions.

Choose the specific arithmetic or checklist scenario and establish its input amounts, dates, rates and criteria from the applicable records. Keep currencies, periods and jurisdictions consistent; review the tool-specific assumptions before interpreting the result.

How to use GRAT Remainder Value and understand its results

  1. Choose the specific arithmetic or checklist scenario and establish its input amounts, dates, rates and criteria from the applicable records. Keep currencies, periods and jurisdictions consistent; review the tool-specific assumptions before interpreting the result.
  2. Enter contributionValue, annualAnnuity, annualDiscountRatePercent, termYears using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read annuityPresentValue, taxableRemainderValue. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
contributionValueGRAT contribution valuenumber; minimum: 0Required
annualAnnuityAnnual annuitynumber; minimum: 0Required
annualDiscountRatePercentAnnual discount rate (%)number; minimum: 0Required
termYearsGRAT term (years)integer; minimum: 1Required

Enter nonnegative contribution, annuity payment and discount rate with term under the field constraints. Return annuity present value and floored modeled remainder.

annuityPV=payment×[1−(1+r)^−term]/r; r=0 → payment×term; remainder=max(0,contribution−annuityPV)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Mortality, payment timing variants, actuarial tables and legal gift valuation are not implemented. A remainder of zero is a model output, not confirmation of a valid trust structure.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use QPRT Remainder Value: Model a QPRT remainder using caller-supplied property value, term, and discount rate. For a complementary task, use CRUT–CLAT Comparison: Compare caller-supplied CRUT remainder and CLAT lead valuation factors.
