Farm Resource External Input Share

Normalize an explicitly recorded external-input amount to compatible total input on a caller-defined accounting basis.

Description

Calculate external resources as a fraction of total farm inputs.

Farm sustainability accounting needs explicit resource units, system boundaries, reference periods and source versions. A reused-water or renewable-energy share uses a declared total, while a soil carbon stock combines depth, bulk density and carbon mass fraction. Local quantities do not by themselves establish environmental benefit, additionality, certification or comparable life-cycle impacts.

Calculate external resources as a fraction of total farm inputs.

When to use this tool

Use Farm Resource External Input Share when you already have externalInputAmount, totalInputAmount and need to calculate external resources as a fraction of total farm inputs.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter externalInputAmount, totalInputAmount. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read fraction, remainder. Use the output convention below.

Require totalInputAmount>0 and external amount within total; return external/total and total-external.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
externalInputAmountExternal Input AmountRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
totalInputAmountTotal Input AmountRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
fractionFractionRequired. Finite number.
remainderRemainderRequired. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Inputs must have a compatible additive unit and boundary; external origin alone does not establish environmental impact.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a documented farm inventory with matched system boundaries and reference periods for broader sustainability analysis. For soil carbon, retain the original sampling depth, density, carbon assay and coarse-fragment basis rather than interpreting one layer product as a verified stock change.
