Passage Width-to-Height Aspect Classifier
Actual width/height ratio classified by independently applicable half-open caller bands, overlaps retained; no universal passage aspect categories.
Description
Passage aspect compares measured width with measured height.
Passage aspect compares measured width with measured height.1
Independently adopted ratio bands can overlap and need not cover every possible passage shape.
When to use Passage Width-to-Height Aspect Classifier
Use this tool to obtain observedWidthHeightRatio, matchedCallerAspectClasses from the supplied records using the stated calculation. Establish the survey or observation scope, reference frame, units and independently applicable calibration or qualified plan.
How to use Passage Width-to-Height Aspect Classifier and understand its results
- Establish the survey or observation scope, reference frame, units and independently applicable calibration or qualified plan.
- Enter actualWidthMeters, actualHeightMeters, callerApplicableBandLowerAspectRatios, callerApplicableBandUpperAspectRatios, callerBandNames, using the field meanings and rules below, then run the tool.
- Read result.observedWidthHeightRatio, result.matchedCallerAspectClasses. Use the units and sign conventions below, and review any unknown records separately.
- Correct any reported input issue and run again. Before using a successful result, check the stated units, signs, reference scope and observation coverage.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| actualWidthMeters | Actual width meters | number | Required |
| actualHeightMeters | Actual height meters | number | Required |
| callerApplicableBandLowerAspectRatios | Caller applicable band lower aspect ratios | list of number | Required |
| callerApplicableBandUpperAspectRatios | Caller applicable band upper aspect ratios | list of number | Required |
| callerBandNames | Caller band names | list of string | Required |
Require positive width and height in metres and calculate width/height. Supply nonempty aligned unique nonblank band names and finite lower/upper ratio bounds, requiring lower<upper for every band. Return every matching band in caller order using inclusive lower and exclusive upper boundaries. Overlapping matches are retained; gaps yield an empty list.
aspect=width/height; matches={band_i:lower_i≤aspect<upper_i} Use the matching field units and the exact boundary, ordering and reference rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| result | Qualified observed calculation or explicit reference | object |
| result.observedWidthHeightRatio | Measured passage width divided by measured passage height. | number |
| result.matchedCallerAspectClasses | All supplied aspect-band labels satisfying inclusive lower and exclusive upper bounds. | list |

} Limitations and assumptions
The actual observation coverage, calibration and qualified plan determine applicability. A numerical result does not establish survey accuracy, route suitability, atmosphere conditions or equipment adequacy beyond the declared comparison.
Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types and violated rules return input issues. Numeric values and outputs must be finite. Lists and matrices must be dense, without missing cells. Numeric lists allow at most 10000 entries, subject to the narrower lengths and code rules above. String lists allow at most 128 entries of at most 128 UTF-16 units each; blank and duplicate rules are stated above. Extremely large composite outputs are rejected.
Alternative or Complementary methods
For a related step, use Passage Cross Section Area Estimator: An ordered surveyed passage boundary can define a simple polygonal cross-section. For a complementary comparison, use Canyon vs Tube Passage Shape Classifier: Canyon and tube morphology can be represented by independently assessed feature annotations.
