Speleothem Layer Count Chronology Counter

Actual disjoint layer counts×independently demonstrated layer periodicity+independently resolved hiatus years. Not assume all layers annual or derive absolute age without anchors.

Description

Speleothem layers can support a chronology only after their deposition periodicity is established.

Speleothem layers can support a chronology only after their deposition periodicity is established.1

Resolved hiatus time is separate from counted layers and an absolute date anchor.

When to use Speleothem Layer Count Chronology Counter

Use this tool to obtain observedIdentifiedLayerCount, conditionalLayerChronologyYears from the supplied records using the stated calculation. Establish the survey or observation scope, reference frame, units and independently applicable calibration or qualified plan.

How to use Speleothem Layer Count Chronology Counter and understand its results

  1. Establish the survey or observation scope, reference frame, units and independently applicable calibration or qualified plan.
  2. Enter independentlyIdentifiedLayerCountsBySection, callerVerifiedYearsPerAnnualLayer, callerVerifiedHiatusYears, using the field meanings and rules below, then run the tool.
  3. Read result.observedIdentifiedLayerCount, result.conditionalLayerChronologyYears. Use the units and sign conventions below, and review any unknown records separately.
  4. Correct any reported input issue and run again. Before using a successful result, check the stated units, signs, reference scope and observation coverage.
Input fieldMeaningValue typeRequirement
independentlyIdentifiedLayerCountsBySectionIndependently identified layer counts by sectionlist of numberRequired
callerVerifiedYearsPerAnnualLayerCaller verified years per annual layernumberRequired
callerVerifiedHiatusYearsCaller verified hiatus yearsnumberRequired

Require a nonempty list of integer section layer counts from zero through one million, a positive caller-established years-per-layer factor and nonnegative resolved hiatus years. Sum counts and multiply by periodicity, then add hiatus years. The field name containing annual does not force a one-year periodicity.

layerCount=Σcounts; chronologyYears=layerCount×yearsPerLayer+hiatusYears

Use the matching field units and the exact boundary, ordering and reference rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

The actual observation coverage, calibration and qualified plan determine applicability. A numerical result does not establish survey accuracy, route suitability, atmosphere conditions or equipment adequacy beyond the declared comparison.

Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types and violated rules return input issues. Numeric values and outputs must be finite. Lists and matrices must be dense, without missing cells. Numeric lists allow at most 10000 entries, subject to the narrower lengths and code rules above. Extremely large composite outputs are rejected.

Alternative or Complementary methods

For a related step, use Stalagmite Height to Age Rough Estimate Calculator: A constant mean-growth scenario relates stalagmite height to an independently applicable growth rate. For a complementary comparison, use Flowstone Growth Rate Age Estimate Calculator: A constant average-growth scenario relates flowstone thickness to an applicable deposition rate.
