Description

Local jitter from supplied consecutive cycle periods without extracting pitch.

Successive voiced cycles can have slightly different durations. Local jitter expresses their mean absolute period-to-period change relative to the mean period. It is dimensionless: use one common duration unit for every period, such as seconds or milliseconds.

Local jitter from supplied consecutive cycle periods without extracting pitch.

When to use this tool

Use Voice Research Jitter One Cycle Gap when you need the stated acoustic, annotation, timing, or record-support calculation for supplied research data.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter periods. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read meanPeriod, meanAbsoluteDifference, localJitter. Use the output convention below.

For at least two positive periods return their mean, the mean absolute difference of adjacent periods, and localJitter as that adjacent-difference mean divided by meanPeriod.1

Local jitter compares successive period differences with mean period. Clinical thresholds and acoustic extraction procedures are separate from that ratio.2

Limitations and assumptions

  • LocalJitter is a fraction, not a percentage numeral. Period detection, voiced-cycle selection, filtering thresholds, acoustic recording quality, and clinical voice interpretation are outside this supplied-period calculation.
  • The field tables state structural bounds; the mechanics also specify cross-field constraints. Malformed inputs and unsupported domains cause errors. A successful false flag, empty branch value, or zero placeholder has the meaning stated above and is distinct from an input error.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Signed zero is exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use validated acoustic extraction and annotation procedures for the intended research task. A clinical interpretation needs an appropriate assessment method beyond this supplied-data calculation.
