Net Migration Rate Calculator
Observed net migration per 1,000 matched population-person-years. Actual disjoint same-period strata and classifications required; sign retained and no causal inference.
Description
Net migration subtracts emigrants from immigrants under a matched population scope.
Net migration subtracts emigrants from immigrants under a matched population scope.1
A person-time denominator gives a signed rate per thousand rather than a destination forecast.
When to use Net Migration Rate Calculator
Use this tool to obtain observedSignedRatePer1000 from the supplied records using the stated calculation. Establish the population, period, variable definitions, sample coverage and independently applicable instrument or calibration.
How to use Net Migration Rate Calculator and understand its results
- Establish the population, period, variable definitions, sample coverage and independently applicable instrument or calibration.
- Enter immigrantCounts, emigrantCounts, matchedPopulationPersonYears, using the field meanings and rules below, then run the tool.
- Read result.observedSignedRatePer1000. Use the units and sign conventions below, and review any unknown records separately.
- Correct any reported input issue and run again. Before using a successful result, check the stated units, signs, reference scope and observation coverage.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| immigrantCounts | Immigrant counts | list of number | Required |
| emigrantCounts | Emigrant counts | list of number | Required |
| matchedPopulationPersonYears | Matched population person years | list of number | Required |
Supply aligned nonempty finite nonnegative component count lists and nonnegative matched person-year exposures with positive total exposure. Sum each count inventory, apply the declared signed balance and scale by one thousand divided by pooled exposure. Counts need not be integers and negative net change is retained. This is a pooled accounting rate rather than compound stock growth.
signedRatePer1000=1000×(Σimmigrants−Σemigrants)/ΣpopulationPersonYears Use the matching field units and the exact boundary, ordering and reference rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| result | Calculated observation or qualified reference | object |
| result.observedSignedRatePer1000 | Signed component accounting balance per thousand matched population person-years. | number |

Population definitions, survey design, calibration and observation coverage are independently established. A result describes the supplied record or conditional model without demonstrating causation, validating an instrument or supplying representative population evidence.
Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types and violated rules return input issues. Numeric values and outputs must be finite. Lists and matrices must be dense, without missing cells. Numeric lists allow at most 10000 entries, subject to the narrower lengths and code rules above. Extremely large composite outputs are rejected.
Alternative or Complementary methods
For a related step, use Population Growth Rate Calculator: Observed population change combines births, deaths and net migration. For a complementary comparison, use Natural Increase Rate Calculator: Natural increase subtracts deaths from births under a matched population scope.
