Histogram Overlap Bin Residual

Partition two explicit nonnegative histogram bin masses into overlap and one-sided residuals without normalizing histograms.

Loading tool…

Description

Separate histogram-bin overlap from each bin's residual.

Similarity calculations require a clear representation and normalization. Histogram overlap is formed from comparable bins, while an angular quantity may be expressed in degrees or radians. One local bin contribution or angle conversion does not construct a complete similarity measure, compare observations or establish statistical meaning.

Separate histogram-bin overlap from each bin's residual.

When to use this tool

Use Histogram Overlap Bin Residual when you already have firstBin, secondBin and need to separate histogram-bin overlap from each bin's residual.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter firstBin, secondBin. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read overlap, firstResidual, secondResidual. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative firstBin/secondBin; return min(first, second) and the two positive differences.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • One bin does not define a full normalized histogram similarity, distance or distribution comparison.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Compare complete histograms on matching bins and normalization when a distribution-level overlap is needed. If an angular similarity is required, calculate it from the underlying representations and state its unit; a single-bin or unit conversion remains local.
