Instar Molt Wake Hours

Interpolate an observed cohort wake-fraction crossing after molt start; missing or nonunique crossings are censored/ambiguous rather than assigned reference molt hours.

Description

A cohort wakes progressively after molt.

A cohort wakes progressively after molt. Its criterion crossing depends on the chosen fraction of the original observed larvae.

Interpolate an observed cohort wake-fraction crossing after molt start; missing or nonunique crossings are censored/ambiguous rather than assigned reference molt hours.

When to use Instar Molt Wake Hours

Use this tool to interpolate an observed cohort wake-fraction crossing after molt start; missing or nonunique crossings are censored/ambiguous rather than assigned reference molt hours.

Prepare cocoon, larval, leaf or reeling measurements on a consistent batch and moisture basis. Use the declared mass, length and time units.

How to use Instar Molt Wake Hours and understand its results

  1. Prepare cocoon, larval, leaf or reeling measurements on a consistent batch and moisture basis. Use the declared mass, length and time units.
  2. Enter timeHours, cumulativeAwakeLarvae, observedLarvaCount, wakeFraction, moltStartHour using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read wakeCriterionHour, moltToWakeHours. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
timeHoursTime hourslist of numberRequired
cumulativeAwakeLarvaeCumulative awake larvaelist of numberRequired
observedLarvaCountObserved larva countintegerRequired
wakeFractionWake fractionnumberRequired
moltStartHourMolt start hournumberRequired

Use positive integer cohort size, criterion fraction in (0,1], increasing hours and nondecreasing integer awake counts within the cohort. Molt start cannot follow the first observation. Require one unique bracketed crossing.1

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths. Each sequence checked for increasing order must contain at least two strictly increasing values.

wake target = cohort count × fraction; duration = interpolated crossing hour − molt start

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Missing and plateau crossings are rejected rather than assigned nominal reference hours.

Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Nonhibernating Acid Incubation Delay Days: Compare observed exposed/control hatch-fraction timings on original egg denominators; signed delay is descriptive, censored/plateau crossings error, and no acid recipe or causal inference is supplied. For a complementary task, use Larval Days To Spinning Total: Sum caller feeding, intervening molt and spinning-delay durations into a UTC calendar forecast, rounding up fractional completion days; no embedded strain-development schedule.
