Semiconductor MESFET Transconductance Calculator
Extract local MESFET measured dId/dVg and current within caller same-drain-bias trace, not a saturation transconductance parameter formula or extrapolation.
Description
Transconductance is the local rate of drain-current change with gate voltage on a matched transistor branch.
Transconductance is the local rate of drain-current change with gate voltage on a matched transistor branch.1
A measured MESFET trace supplies that slope without assuming a saturation-current parameter model.
When to use Semiconductor MESFET Transconductance Calculator
Use this tool when you need to read a measured branch response and local slope within its recorded domain. Prepare independently matched device or specimen measurements, units, branch selection, and model or calibration conventions.
How to use Semiconductor MESFET Transconductance Calculator and understand its results
- Prepare independently matched device or specimen measurements, units, branch selection, and model or calibration conventions.
- Enter observedMesfetGateV, observedMatchedDrainAmps, queryGateV, following the field table and calculation rules below, then run the tool.
- Read interpolatedMesfetDrainAmps, localMeasuredTransconductanceSiemens. Use the output table and calculation rules below to interpret units, signs, crossings, and flags.
- Correct any input issues and run again. Before using a successful result, review its units, signs, evidence coverage, and stated model or reference assumptions.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| observedMesfetGateV | Observed MESFET gate v | list of number | Required |
| observedMatchedDrainAmps | Observed matched drain amps | list of number | Required |
| queryGateV | Query gate v | number | Required |
Require nonnegative drain currents. Apply the curve algorithm below to measured gate voltages and an in-range query; signed gate voltages and signed local slopes are accepted.
The curve helper requires at least two aligned samples with coordinates strictly increasing and a query inside the closed sampled interval. It linearly interpolates between bracketing samples and returns the segment slope. At an exact knot, the value is the observed response and the slope uses the segment to the right, except the final knot uses the last segment. Out-of-range queries fail. Any additional domain restrictions stated above still apply.
t=(q−x_i)/(x_(i+1)−x_i); response=(1−t)y_i+ty_(i+1); slope=(y_(i+1)−y_i)/(x_(i+1)−x_i) Read these symbols with the field meanings and branch or reference rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| interpolatedMesfetDrainAmps | Interpolated MESFET drain amps | number |
| localMeasuredTransconductanceSiemens | Local measured transconductance siemens | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Interpretation requires a matched measured branch and unit convention. A local secant slope is not a fitted global material law, a confidence interval, or support for extrapolating beyond the measurements.
Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types, and violated calculation rules return input issues. Numeric values must be finite; nonfinite numeric outputs are rejected. Arrays must be dense, with no missing cells. Numeric lists allow at most 10000 entries, subject to smaller tool-specific bounds above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
For a related task, use Semiconductor MESFET Threshold Voltage Calculator: A one-sided Schottky depletion model balances built-in voltage against channel depletion potential. Uniform doping and the stated channel-thickness convention are assumptions supplied for this MESFET threshold calculation. For a complementary step, use Semiconductor OTFT Threshold Voltage Calculator: A square-root saturation-current branch can provide a fitted transistor threshold intercept. Its interpretation depends on independently selecting a suitable branch rather than assuming a universal OTFT threshold.
