Random Unit Conversion Exercise Generator

Generate supported length and temperature conversion questions with explicit units and computed answers.

Description

Generate supported length or temperature conversion exercises with explicit units and computed answer keys.

Unit conversion expresses the same quantity using another measurement scale. Length conversions use multiplicative factors; temperature scales can additionally require an offset. The source and destination units are essential parts of a conversion question.1

This tool randomly chooses a supported conversion pair and a nonnegative input value, then computes the answer with the corresponding converter. It returns exercises inside result, with kind, fromUnit, toUnit, value, and answer for each item. It does not hide the answer key automatically.

When to use Random Unit Conversion Exercise Generator

Use it for unit-conversion practice or example worksheets using the tool’s fixed length and temperature pair sets.

How to use Random Unit Conversion Exercise Generator and understand its results

  1. Enter exerciseCount as an integer from 1 through 64 and positive maximumMagnitude no greater than 1,000,000.
  2. Run the generator and read result.exercises. Use kind and both unit fields to display each question accurately.
  3. Separate answer from the learner-facing prompt if needed, and check answers with appropriate rounding while retaining the original units.
KindSupported directed pairs
Lengthm→ft, km→mi, cm→in, yd→m
TemperatureC→F, F→C, C→K, K→C
kind = floor(2 × r1); pair index = floor(4 × r2); value = maximumMagnitude × r3

Three random draws are used per exercise; a uniform source assigns equal probability to the two kinds and to each pair within the kind.

Length answers use the length converter’s unit factors; temperature answers use its scale transformations. Temperature value is a point on the source scale, not a temperature difference. With ordinary valid draws, value is in [0, maximumMagnitude), subject to floating-point rounding.

A zero random value can generate a zero-valued quantity. Questions and unit pairs may repeat; exerciseCount does not request distinct questions. Zero maximumMagnitude, counts above 64, and invalid random draws are rejected.

Limitations and assumptions

The default source is Math.random; no seed input or cryptographic entropy guarantee is provided. Repeated runs may select the same result, and the distribution depends on the random source.

Only the eight directed pairs are supported; there are no compound units, negative input values, significant-figure rules, or custom difficulty controls. Temperature answers can be negative even though generated inputs are nonnegative.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the individual converters for a chosen question or additional supported unit combinations. The generated numeric answers are reference calculations rather than preformatted marking rubrics.
