Static Friction Bound Margin

Compare an explicit required friction magnitude with a supplied Coulomb static-friction bound without selecting a material coefficient.

Description

Compare required friction with a supplied static-friction magnitude bound.

Physical quantities require compatible units, coordinate directions, reference origins and model assumptions. Mass and weight, angular and cyclic frequency, particle velocity and wave speed are distinct quantities. Ideal single-axis, linear-spring and constant-torque terms describe supplied models rather than identify real material behavior or safe operating limits.

Compare required friction with a supplied static-friction magnitude bound.

When to use this tool

Use Static Friction Bound Margin when you already have normalForceNewtons, suppliedStaticCoefficient, requiredFrictionMagnitudeNewtons and need to compare required friction with a supplied static-friction magnitude bound.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter normalForceNewtons, suppliedStaticCoefficient, requiredFrictionMagnitudeNewtons. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read maximumMagnitudeNewtons, marginNewtons, withinSuppliedBound. Inspect withinSuppliedBound before interpreting the associated values.

Require nonnegative normal force, coefficient and required magnitude; maximum=normal*coefficient, margin=maximum-required and within means required<=maximum.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This checks a supplied ideal Coulomb bound, not actual force direction, material friction, stability or safe support.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the full force, energy or wave model with compatible reference frames and units for a physical prediction. Include changing loads, material behavior and losses when the ideal constant-parameter term no longer represents the system.
