Elastic Potential Preload Energy Difference

Calculate the signed change in ideal linear spring potential from explicit extensions about the same unstretched reference.

Description

Calculate an ideal spring's energy change between two supplied extensions.

Physical quantities require compatible units, coordinate directions, reference origins and model assumptions. Mass and weight, angular and cyclic frequency, particle velocity and wave speed are distinct quantities. Ideal single-axis, linear-spring and constant-torque terms describe supplied models rather than identify real material behavior or safe operating limits.

Calculate an ideal spring's energy change between two supplied extensions.

When to use this tool

Use Elastic Potential Preload Energy Difference when you already have springConstantNewtonsPerMeter, initialExtensionMeters, finalExtensionMeters and need to calculate an ideal spring's energy change between two supplied extensions.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter springConstantNewtonsPerMeter, initialExtensionMeters, finalExtensionMeters. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read energyChangeJoules. Use the output convention below.

Require k>=0 in N/m; return 0.5*k*(final-initial)*(final+initial) in J.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Signed extensions and negative energy change are allowed; assumes an ideal linear spring referenced to zero extension, without hysteresis or nonlinear preload effects.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the full force, energy or wave model with compatible reference frames and units for a physical prediction. Include changing loads, material behavior and losses when the ideal constant-parameter term no longer represents the system.
