Description
Return mean potential and total acoustic energy densities for a progressive linear plane wave using RMS pressure.
Acoustic RMS pressure describes a fluctuating pressure amplitude. Active intensity depends on the resistive part of acoustic impedance, whereas pressure-based energy density also needs a propagation model, density, and sound speed. Reactive fields and progressive plane waves need different interpretations.
Return mean potential and total acoustic energy densities for a progressive linear plane wave using RMS pressure.
When to use this tool
Use Acoustic Energy Density Pressure Term when you need the stated intensity or energy-density term under a specified acoustic impedance or plane-wave model.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter pressureRms, density, soundSpeed. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read potentialEnergyDensity, totalPlaneWaveDensity. Use the output convention below.
For nonnegative pressureRms and positive density and soundSpeed return totalPlaneWaveDensity=pressureRms^2/(density*soundSpeed^2) and potentialEnergyDensity=totalPlaneWaveDensity/2.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |

| pressureRms | Nonnegative RMS acoustic pressure, not peak amplitude. | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| density | Mass per volume in a consistent physical unit system. | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| soundSpeed | Positive sound speed in compatible length per time units. | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| potentialEnergyDensity | Potential Energy Density | Required. Finite number. |
| totalPlaneWaveDensity | Total Plane Wave Density | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Pa, kg/m^3, and m/s give J/m^3. RMS pressure and a progressive linear plane-wave relation are assumed; standing-wave partitioning, nonlinear waves, and hearing safety are not evaluated.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Signed zero is exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use an acoustic field model and appropriate measurements when plane-wave or scalar-impedance assumptions are insufficient. Distinguish RMS from peak pressure and active from reactive intensity.
