Nit Distance Age Estimate
Estimate elapsed hair-growth time from nit distance; distance alone does not establish nit viability.
Description
The distance of a nit from the scalp can be divided by an assumed hair growth rate to obtain an attachment-age estimate.
The distance of a nit from the scalp can be divided by an assumed hair growth rate to obtain an attachment-age estimate. The estimate depends directly on the chosen growth rate.
The tool returns estimatedAttachmentDays (estimated attachment days); recentIndexes (recent indexes). Input measurements and model parameters are supplied by the caller; the tool computes the stated summary rather than acquiring those measurements.
When to use Nit Distance Age Estimate
Use Nit Distance Age Estimate when you already have nitDistancesMm, hairGrowthMmPerDay, maximumRecentDays and want estimatedAttachmentDays, recentIndexes. This is useful for checking a supplied calculation, documenting a measurement convention, or comparing observations prepared on the same basis.
How to use Nit Distance Age Estimate and understand its results
- Enter nitDistancesMm, hairGrowthMmPerDay, maximumRecentDays using the field table below. Match the units, ordering and data boundaries described in the calculation.
- Run the tool after checking the stated bounds and matching paired observations or categories. A malformed request gives a tool error rather than a usable measurement.
- Read estimatedAttachmentDays, recentIndexes. Use the calculation and interpretation below to distinguish amounts, ratios, signs and decision flags where applicable.
- Review the supplied parameters and assumptions before using the result in a report or comparing it with another observation.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type and bounds | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| nitDistancesMm | Nit distances mm | list of number | Required |
| hairGrowthMmPerDay | Hair growth mm per day | number | Required |
| maximumRecentDays | Maximum recent days | number | Required |
Accept nonnegative distances and a positive growth rate. Return zero-based positions whose estimated age is at or below the supplied maximum age; an empty distance list remains empty.
estimated age days = distanceMm / growthMmPerDay The symbols refer to the supplied quantities or generated values described above; unit conversions and comparison boundaries follow the stated implementation.

} Limitations and assumptions
Hair growth, movement and measurement error are not estimated. Proximity does not establish that a nit is viable or an infestation is active.
Numerical inputs must be finite. The tool checks its declared input shape and calculation constraints; those checks do not verify the quality, calibration or representativeness of the supplied observations.
