NISP to MNE Conversion

Infer minimum elements as maximum diagnostic landmark multiplicity within caller matched element/side groups, then compare NISP; fragments are not directly divided by a universal conversion factor.

Description

NISP counts identified specimens, while MNE uses repeated diagnostic landmarks to bound represented elements.

NISP counts identified specimens, while MNE uses repeated diagnostic landmarks to bound represented elements. Fragment counts alone do not supply a fixed conversion.

Infer minimum elements as maximum diagnostic landmark multiplicity within caller matched element/side groups, then compare NISP; fragments are not directly divided by a universal conversion factor.

When to use NISP to MNE Conversion

Use this tool to infer minimum elements as maximum diagnostic landmark multiplicity within caller matched element/side groups, then compare NISP; fragments are not directly divided by a universal conversion factor.

Prepare the fossil measurements or occurrence records and the chosen calibration parameters. Retain the stated coordinate, age and measurement conventions.

How to use NISP to MNE Conversion and understand its results

  1. Prepare the fossil measurements or occurrence records and the chosen calibration parameters. Retain the stated coordinate, age and measurement conventions.
  2. Enter diagnosticLandmarkCountsByElement, nispCountsByElement using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read minimumElementCounts, totalMne, totalNisp, nispPerMne. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
diagnosticLandmarkCountsByElementDiagnostic landmark counts by elementlist of list of numberRequired
nispCountsByElementNisp counts by elementlist of numberRequired

Align nonnegative integer NISP with nonempty rectangular landmark rows up to 128×128. Require each maximum no greater than its specimen count and positive summed MNE. Return group MNE, totals and NISP/MNE.1

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

MNE per element group = maximum diagnostic landmark multiplicity

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Element, side and refitting groups must already be established.

Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Matrices are limited to 128 rows and 128 entries per row; other numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Minimum Animal Units MAU: Normalize independently established MNE by skeletal element copies and maximum MAU; fractional animal units are representational indexes, unlike ceiling-based MNI individual bounds. For a complementary task, use Fragmentation Index Bone Assemblage: Summarize observed fragment multiplicity on independently refitted elements and retain unrefittable coverage; unidentified pieces do not become inferred elements or breakage histories.
