Net Diversification Rate
Calculate signed event/exposure net diversification with independent origination/extinction counting error; unlike log endpoint richness growth, this requires explicit event and lineage-time inventories.
Description
Net diversification is the signed difference between origination and extinction event rates.
Net diversification is the signed difference between origination and extinction event rates. Exposure and independent count error must be explicit.
Calculate signed event/exposure net diversification with independent origination/extinction counting error; unlike log endpoint richness growth, this requires explicit event and lineage-time inventories.
When to use Net Diversification Rate
Use this tool to calculate signed event/exposure net diversification with independent origination/extinction counting error; unlike log endpoint richness growth, this requires explicit event and lineage-time inventories.
Prepare the fossil measurements or occurrence records and the chosen calibration parameters. Retain the stated coordinate, age and measurement conventions.
How to use Net Diversification Rate and understand its results
- Prepare the fossil measurements or occurrence records and the chosen calibration parameters. Retain the stated coordinate, age and measurement conventions.
- Enter originationEventCount, extinctionEventCount, lineageTimeExposureMyr using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read originationRatePerLineageMyr, extinctionRatePerLineageMyr, signedNetDiversificationRatePerLineageMyr, independentNetRateStandardError. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| originationEventCount | Origination event count | integer | Required |
| extinctionEventCount | Extinction event count | integer | Required |
| lineageTimeExposureMyr | Lineage time exposure myr | number | Required |
Use nonnegative integer event counts and positive exposure. Return both rates, signed difference and √(originations + extinctions)/exposure as independent-count standard error.1
net rate = (originations − extinctions)/lineage-time exposure Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| originationRatePerLineageMyr | Origination rate per lineage myr | number |
| extinctionRatePerLineageMyr | Extinction rate per lineage myr | number |
| signedNetDiversificationRatePerLineageMyr | Signed net diversification rate per lineage myr | number |
| independentNetRateStandardError | Independent net rate standard error | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
This differs from endpoint-richness log growth and excludes correlated events or preservation correction.
Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Origination Rate per Lineage-Million-Year: Normalize observed origination events by explicit lineage-time exposure with an independent Poisson count standard error; no preservation correction or phylogenetic birth-rate inference. For a complementary task, use Extinction Magnitude Percent Taxa: Compare distinct before/after observed taxa with comparable detection, separating lost/surviving/new records; absent observations do not themselves establish biological extinction.
