External Fundamental System EFS Maturity Flag

Screen supplied inner-to-outer band widths/vascularity for a caller EFS-like outer run; independently assessed histology and taxonomic context remain necessary, not a maturity diagnosis.

Description

An external fundamental system is assessed histologically.

An external fundamental system is assessed histologically. A run of narrow, low-vascularity outer bands is only an EFS-like morphology criterion.

Screen supplied inner-to-outer band widths/vascularity for a caller EFS-like outer run; independently assessed histology and taxonomic context remain necessary, not a maturity diagnosis.

When to use External Fundamental System EFS Maturity Flag

Use this tool to screen supplied inner-to-outer band widths/vascularity for a caller EFS-like outer run; independently assessed histology and taxonomic context remain necessary, not a maturity diagnosis.

Prepare the fossil measurements or occurrence records and the chosen calibration parameters. Retain the stated coordinate, age and measurement conventions.

How to use External Fundamental System EFS Maturity Flag and understand its results

  1. Prepare the fossil measurements or occurrence records and the chosen calibration parameters. Retain the stated coordinate, age and measurement conventions.
  2. Enter outerBandWidthsMicrometers, outerBandVascularPorosities, callerMaximumBandWidthMicrometers, callerMaximumOuterPorosity, callerMinimumQualifyingConsecutiveBands using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read qualifyingOuterBandFlags, outermostQualifyingBandRun, callerEfsMorphologyCriterionObserved. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

outerBandVascularPorositiesOuter band vascular porositieslist of numberRequired
callerMaximumBandWidthMicrometersCaller maximum band width micrometersnumberRequired
callerMaximumOuterPorosityCaller maximum outer porositynumberRequired
callerMinimumQualifyingConsecutiveBandsCaller minimum qualifying consecutive bandsintegerRequired

Align inner-to-outer nonnegative widths and porosities in [0,1]. Use nonnegative maximum width, fraction maximum porosity and positive integer minimum run. Count only the qualifying outermost suffix and compare inclusively.1

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

qualifying = width ≤ maximum AND porosity ≤ maximum; run = qualifying suffix length

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Taxonomic and histological context remain necessary; the flag is not a maturity diagnosis.

Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Growth Ring Lines of Arrested Growth Counter: Combine observed LAG counts with explicit resorption/double-band assumptions, taking the largest section-based minimum annual-age scenario; annual periodicity is an assumption, not automatically established skeletal age. For a complementary task, use Tooth Crown Height Wear Stage Rater: Screen measured relative tooth crown loss against caller wear bands on comparable unworn reference crowns; no embedded species ages, reconstructed wear history or diet diagnosis.
