Wave Buoy Heave Spectrum HS Estimate Calculator

Rectangular-bin spectral integration Hm0=4sqrt(m0) from actual calibrated one-sided heave PSD; does not perform buoy-response correction or FFT.

Description

Integrate a qualified heave spectrum and estimate spectral significant wave height.

A qualified heave variance-density spectrum can be integrated over frequency bands to estimate a spectral significant wave height. The band widths and densities must use compatible frequency and displacement units.

When to use this tool

Integrate a qualified heave spectrum and estimate spectral significant wave height. Use it when the input measurements and conventions below match the operation you need.

  • Prepare frequencyBinWidthsHz, heaveDensityM2PerHz, respecting the measurement basis and boundaries below.
  • Compare the worked example with your intended operation before reusing its result.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter every field in the input table using the stated units and exact supported selector spelling where applicable.
  2. Run the tool. Correct input errors before interpreting an output.
  3. Read the result fields below; use accompanying flags and the stated sign, boundary or model convention when interpreting a number.

Provide aligned positive frequency-band widths and nonnegative spectral densities. The tool sums width times density to obtain m0 and returns Hs = 4 times sqrt(m0).1

Limitations and assumptions

  • No time-series FFT, buoy response correction or spectral quality control is performed. The estimate assumes the supplied heave spectrum is already suitable for the wave-height convention.
  • Every declared field is required and unexpected fields are rejected. Numeric inputs must be finite; input errors are distinct from a valid false result or an explicitly qualified output.
  • Extremely large inputs and nonfinite or excessively large outputs are rejected. List positions reported by the tool use zero-based indices unless stated otherwise.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Compare the result with independently checked observations or a model that covers the omitted dynamics. Use compatible frames, units and sampling conventions when carrying the value into another calculation. Compare the scope of the nearby tools below before substituting one.
