Haline Contraction Beta Seawater

Infer signed haline contraction from a supplied density/salinity regression at fixed temperature/pressure; thermal expansion uses a different fixed-property bracket experiment.

Description

Haline contraction describes density's salinity derivative at fixed temperature and pressure.

Haline contraction describes density's salinity derivative at fixed temperature and pressure. A supplied calibration can estimate that derivative.

Infer signed haline contraction from a supplied density/salinity regression at fixed temperature/pressure; thermal expansion uses a different fixed-property bracket experiment.

When to use Haline Contraction Beta Seawater

Use this tool to infer signed haline contraction from a supplied density/salinity regression at fixed temperature/pressure; thermal expansion uses a different fixed-property bracket experiment.

Gather the water, wave, current or profile observations and any supplied calibration constants. Confirm units and the stated coordinate and pressure conventions.

How to use Haline Contraction Beta Seawater and understand its results

  1. Gather the water, wave, current or profile observations and any supplied calibration constants. Confirm units and the stated coordinate and pressure conventions.
  2. Enter calibrationSalinities, calibrationDensitiesKgPerM3, referenceSalinity using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read fittedDensityAtReferenceKgPerM3, estimatedContractionPerSalinity, fitRSquared. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

calibrationDensitiesKgPerM3Calibration densities kg per m3list of numberRequired
referenceSalinityReference salinitynumberRequired

Use increasing nonnegative calibration salinities and positive aligned densities. Require reference salinity inside the range and positive fitted reference density. Return signed contraction coefficient and R².1

Each sequence checked for increasing order must contain at least two strictly increasing values. The least-squares fit needs at least two aligned observations and a varying independent variable; a constant dependent variable has reported R² of 1.

beta = density-versus-salinity slope/fitted reference density

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No fixed-property verification or universal seawater coefficient is supplied.

Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Thermal Expansion Alpha Seawater: Estimate signed thermal expansion from measured density-temperature brackets at fixed salinity/pressure; not a reference-property lookup or a universal seawater coefficient. For a complementary task, use Steric Sea Level Expansion Contribution: Compute exact mass-conserving layer stretching from paired density states; includes combined density effects, unlike first-order thermal-only anomaly, and excludes mass loading.
