Beach Nourishment Fill Volume

Integrate measured target-minus-existing profile fill on supplied stations and length, then account for retention; target cuts error rather than silently crediting cut volume as nourishment.

Description

Nourishment volume integrates the elevation gap between existing and target beach profiles.

Nourishment volume integrates the elevation gap between existing and target beach profiles. Retention determines how much must be placed.

Integrate measured target-minus-existing profile fill on supplied stations and length, then account for retention; target cuts error rather than silently crediting cut volume as nourishment.

When to use Beach Nourishment Fill Volume

Use this tool to integrate measured target-minus-existing profile fill on supplied stations and length, then account for retention; target cuts error rather than silently crediting cut volume as nourishment.

Gather the water, wave, current or profile observations and any supplied calibration constants. Confirm units and the stated coordinate and pressure conventions.

How to use Beach Nourishment Fill Volume and understand its results

  1. Gather the water, wave, current or profile observations and any supplied calibration constants. Confirm units and the stated coordinate and pressure conventions.
  2. Enter crossShoreStationsM, existingElevationsM, targetElevationsM, alongshoreLengthM, placedToRetainedVolumeFraction using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read retainedFillVolumeM3, requiredPlacedFillVolumeM3. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

Align increasing cross-shore stations and both elevation series. Require nonnegative target-minus-existing everywhere, positive length and retention in (0,1]. Divide retained volume by retention for placed demand.1

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

retained volume = trapezoidal integral(target−existing) × alongshore length

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Target cuts are rejected, not credited against fill; no sediment-transport forecast.

Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Equilibrium Beach Profile Dean Parameter: Fit Dean h=A x^(2/3) through the supplied shoreline origin by depth-residual least squares; not a universal grain-size lookup or free-origin profile fit. For a complementary task, use Littoral Drift Longshore Sediment Rate: Screen signed CERC-form bulk sediment transport with supplied breaker state/coefficient; no sediment supply, directional convention or validated shoreline evolution is inferred.
