Description
Count leading zeros in a positional decimal-digit transcription.
Number representation separates exact integer text, finite floating-point values and display spelling. Rational comparison can use exact cross products without decimal conversion, while floor/ceiling outputs still have a finite safe-integer range. Leading zeros and negative zero carry representational information that a numeric conversion or serializer can discard.
Count leading zeros in a positional decimal-digit transcription.
When to use this tool
Use Positional Digit Leading Zero Count when you already have digitText and need to count leading zeros in a positional decimal-digit transcription.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter digitText. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read leadingZeros, significantDigits. Use the output convention below.
Require nonempty ASCII digits only; count initial 0 characters and return the untouched suffix as significantDigits.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| digitText | Digit Text | Required. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| leadingZeros | Leading Zeros | Required. Safe integer. |
| significantDigits | Unmodified suffix after ASCII leading zeros; empty for an all-zero input, rather than the string 0. | Required. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |
{
"input": {
"digitText": "00042"
},
"output": {
"leadingZeros": 3,
"significantDigits": "42"
}
} Limitations and assumptions
- An all-zero string returns empty significantDigits, not the text 0; no numeric value or radix conversion is performed.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use exact integer or rational arithmetic when exact large-number comparison is needed. Keep original token spelling for formatting questions, and verify that any transport or serialization step preserves distinctions such as leading zeros and negative zero.
