Category Reference Level Indicator

Return a reference-level zero indicator for exact supplied category text without fitting a categorical encoding.

Description

Encode membership in a supplied reference category as zero or one.

Normalization requires an explicit order of operations, center, scale and reference convention. Centering before scaling generally differs from subtracting the same center after scaling. A normalized weight or bounded uncertainty interval inherits supplied assumptions; zero entries, sentinel collisions and reference-category coding need separate interpretation.

Encode membership in a supplied reference category as zero or one.

When to use this tool

Use Category Reference Level Indicator when you already have category, referenceCategory and need to encode membership in a supplied reference category as zero or one.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter category, referenceCategory. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read isReference, indicator. Inspect isReference before interpreting the associated values.

Compare category and referenceCategory literally; equality returns isReference=true and indicator=0, otherwise false and 1.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Empty strings are accepted; no category vocabulary, statistical contrast system or complete one-hot encoding is inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Specify the intended transformation and data basis before estimating or applying parameters. Review missing-value handling and reference coding across the full dataset; one affine term or normalized vector does not establish comparable measurements or a fitted model.
