EEG Alpha Peak Frequency

Find the supplied PSD bin with maximum power in [8, 12) Hz under the MNE alpha convention, choosing the lowest frequency on a tie. The grid need not be uniform; no interpolation or physiological classification is performed.

Description

An alpha peak-bin search selects the greatest supplied PSD value within a chosen conventional band.

An alpha peak-bin search selects the greatest supplied PSD value within a chosen conventional band. A sampled maximum is distinct from an interpolated or physiologically validated peak.1

Find the supplied PSD bin with maximum power in [8, 12) Hz under the MNE alpha convention, choosing the lowest frequency on a tie. The grid need not be uniform; no interpolation or physiological classification is performed.

When to use EEG Alpha Peak Frequency

Use this tool to find the supplied PSD bin with maximum power in [8, 12) Hz under the MNE alpha convention, choosing the lowest frequency on a tie. The grid need not be uniform; no interpolation or physiological classification is performed.

Prepare the task-specific rates, comparable response-time means, identified spike train, processed ERP or estimated spectra requested. Confirm units, preprocessing, sample pairing and caller-fitted model coefficients.

How to use EEG Alpha Peak Frequency and understand its results

  1. Prepare the task-specific rates, comparable response-time means, identified spike train, processed ERP or estimated spectra requested. Confirm units, preprocessing, sample pairing and caller-fitted model coefficients.
  2. Enter frequenciesHz, psdUv2PerHz using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read peakFrequencyHz, peakPsdUv2PerHz. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
frequenciesHzAscending nonnegative frequency bin centers. (Hz)list of number; minimum: 0; minimum entries: 1; maximum entries: 100000Required
psdUv2PerHzNonnegative one-sided EEG power spectral density for each bin. (uV^2/Hz)list of number; minimum: 0; minimum entries: 1; maximum entries: 100000Required

Enter aligned nonempty finite nonnegative frequency/PSD lists with strictly ascending frequencies. The grid may be nonuniform. Require at least one center in [8,12), then return its frequency and PSD; ties choose the lowest frequency.

peak=first maximum PSD among frequency centers in [8,12) Hz

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

peakFrequencyHzFrequency of the selected alpha bin. (Hz)number; minimum: 8; strictly below: 12

Limitations and assumptions

A flat or all-zero alpha spectrum still returns its first eligible bin. No FFT, smoothing, peak-prominence criterion or clinical interpretation is applied.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use EEG Alpha Band Power: Integrate supplied uniform PSD bins by sum(PSD × binWidth), selecting centers in [8, 12) Hz under the MNE band convention. The upper endpoint is excluded and unprovided frequencies contribute no power; no FFT or clinical interpretation is performed. For a complementary task, use ERP P300 Peak Latency: Measure sampled positive peak latency in an explicitly supplied inclusive P300 analysis window. Times are relative to stimulus onset, ties select the earliest sample, and at least one positive amplitude is required. Component identification and preprocessing belong to the caller.
