Description
Subtract straightDistance from positive lineLength for slack, then divide by lineLength for slackFraction.
A straight line, a slack line, and an ideal catenary have different geometries. Geometric projection alone does not determine tension, holding capacity, or safe anchoring conditions.
Subtract straightDistance from positive lineLength for slack, then divide by lineLength for slackFraction.
When to use this tool
Use Mooring Line Length Slack Ratio when you need a geometric line or scope term with explicit assumptions.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter lineLength, straightDistance. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read slack, slackFraction. Use the output convention below.
Subtract straightDistance from positive lineLength for slack, then divide by lineLength for slackFraction. Straight distance cannot exceed line length.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| lineLength | Line Length | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| straightDistance | Straight Distance | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| slack | Slack | Required. Finite number. |
| slackFraction | Slack Fraction | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Slack is geometric excess length, not a tension, catenary, elasticity, or holding-capacity calculation.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use a validated mooring or anchoring analysis that includes line properties, loading, seabed contact, and environmental conditions.
