Solvent Extraction Stages

Count ideal crosscurrent stages with fresh solute-free organic at each stage and constant D/phase ratio; not countercurrent McCabe–Thiele construction.

Description

Ideal crosscurrent solvent extraction uses fresh organic solvent at each stage.

Ideal crosscurrent solvent extraction uses fresh organic solvent at each stage. A constant distribution ratio leaves the same fraction in the aqueous phase after each stage.

The tool returns idealCrosscurrentStages (ideal crosscurrent stages); achievedExtractionFraction (achieved extraction fraction). Input measurements and model parameters are supplied by the caller; the tool computes the stated summary rather than acquiring those measurements.

When to use Solvent Extraction Stages

Use Solvent Extraction Stages when you already have distributionRatio, organicAqueousVolumeRatioPerStage, targetExtractionFraction and want idealCrosscurrentStages, achievedExtractionFraction. This is useful for checking a supplied calculation, documenting a measurement convention, or comparing observations prepared on the same basis.

How to use Solvent Extraction Stages and understand its results

  1. Enter distributionRatio, organicAqueousVolumeRatioPerStage, targetExtractionFraction using the field table below. Match the units, ordering and data boundaries described in the calculation.
  2. Run the tool after checking the stated bounds and matching paired observations or categories. A malformed request gives a tool error rather than a usable measurement.
  3. Read idealCrosscurrentStages, achievedExtractionFraction. Use the calculation and interpretation below to distinguish amounts, ratios, signs and decision flags where applicable.
  4. Review the supplied parameters and assumptions before using the result in a report or comparing it with another observation.
Input fieldMeaningValue type and boundsRequirement
distributionRatioDistribution rationumberRequired
organicAqueousVolumeRatioPerStageOrganic aqueous volume ratio per stagenumberRequired
targetExtractionFractionTarget extraction fractionnumberRequired

Use positive D and per-stage O/A with target in [0,1). Round up the logarithmic stage estimate and correct roundoff by checking neighboring counts.

extracted(n) = 1−(1+D×O/A)^(−n)

The symbols refer to the supplied quantities or generated values described above; unit conversions and comparison boundaries follow the stated implementation.

Limitations and assumptions

Target zero gives zero stages; complete extraction is rejected. This is crosscurrent, not countercurrent design, and assumes equilibrium and constant D.

Numerical inputs must be finite. The tool checks its declared input shape and calculation constraints; those checks do not verify the quality, calibration or representativeness of the supplied observations.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Solvent Extraction Distribution: Compute equilibrium distribution and phase metal fraction with explicit phase volumes and matched concentration units; speciation is external. Overall Recovery: Propagate inventory through serial conditional recoveries and expose losses; parallel-stream recoveries must not be multiplied.
