Caving Height Calculator

Extract actual caving boundary height crossings from independently measured vertical void fractions and caller boundary criterion, all/no crossings retained, no extrapolation, unobserved rock-bulking model, support design or mine stability assurance.

Description

A cave boundary criterion can cross a measured vertical void-fraction profile several times.

A cave boundary criterion can cross a measured vertical void-fraction profile several times.1

This tool retains every observed or interpolated crossing rather than selecting one height.

When to use Caving Height Calculator

Use this tool to calculate or review the supplied observations under the stated rules. Match completed survey or ledger observations by block, segment or stage and confirm their units and boundaries.

How to use Caving Height Calculator and understand its results

  1. Match completed survey or ledger observations by block, segment or stage and confirm their units and boundaries.
  2. Enter observedCaveVerticalCoordinatesM, observedCaveVoidFractions, callerCaveBoundaryVoidFraction, using the field meanings and rules below, then run the tool.
  3. Read observedCaveBoundaryHeightCrossingsM. Inspect nested result fields where present, and review unknown records separately from known matches.
  4. Correct any reported input issue and run again. Before using a successful result, check the stated units, signs, reference scope and observation coverage.

Use nonnegative vertical coordinates, void fractions [0,1] and a criterion [0,1]. Apply the crossings rules below, retaining multiple crossings, exact hits and an empty result if none exists.

Require at least two aligned samples with coordinates strictly increasing. Keep exact sample hits and linearly interpolate every strict sign change around the criterion. Remove adjacent duplicate crossing coordinates and preserve coordinate order. No hit returns an empty list; a plateau exactly at the criterion keeps its sampled coordinates.

height=x_i+Δx_i(criterion−void_i)/Δvoid_i for strict sign changes

Use the matching field units and the exact boundary, ordering and reference rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Units, ledger boundaries, survey interpretation and model applicability must be independently established. These summaries do not assign reserve/resource classifications or establish support adequacy, ventilation safety or an operating setting.

Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types and violated rules return input issues. Numeric values and outputs must be finite. Lists and matrices must be dense, without missing cells. Numeric lists allow at most 10000 entries; ordinary string lists allow at most 128 strings of 128 UTF-16 units each; numeric matrices allow at most 128 rows and 128 columns, subject to narrower requirements above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

For a related step, use Subsidence Curvature Calculator: Subsidence curvature measures change in slope across a measured displacement profile. For a complementary comparison, use Overburden Thickness Calculator: A overburden survey uses paired upper and lower contacts on a shared downward-positive depth datum.
