Archive Unit Name Token Tool

Preserve a supplied public archive unit-name token and provenance without operational interpretation.

Description

Serialize source, series, and name as a JSON array key.

Archival records often contain bounded dates, editions, and source identifiers. Arithmetic on supplied coordinates can check consistency while leaving historical interpretation and authenticity unresolved.

Serialize source, series, and name as a JSON array key.

When to use this tool

Use Archive Unit Name Token when you need a precise date-span or source-record bookkeeping step.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter name, source, series. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read key, nameLength. Use the output convention below.

Serialize source, series, and name as a JSON array key. Count name length by Unicode code points.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
nameNameRequired. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192.
sourceSource identifier or source selector, interpreted under the calculation above.Required. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192.
seriesSeriesRequired. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
keyJSON-array serialization of the stated identifying fields, preserving exact strings.Required. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192.
nameLengthName LengthRequired. Safe integer.
json
{
  "input": {
    "name": "unit-A",
    "source": "museum",
    "series": "series-2"
  },
  "output": {
    "key": "[\"museum\",\"series-2\",\"unit-A\"]",
    "nameLength": 6
  }
}

Limitations and assumptions

  • The key preserves exact strings without normalization or authority resolution; code points are not user-perceived grapheme clusters.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult the original catalog and documented calendar or dating convention when historical interpretation matters.
