Description
Divide nonnegative absoluteError by seasonalScale when positive.
A skill comparison expresses performance relative to a reference loss or scale. Zero baselines and orientation choices can make a nominal score undefined or reverse its interpretation.
Divide nonnegative absoluteError by seasonalScale when positive.
When to use this tool
Use Scaled Error Seasonal Denominator Zero when you need an explicit baseline-relative error or equality term.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter absoluteError, seasonalScale. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read defined, value. Inspect defined before interpreting the associated values.
Divide nonnegative absoluteError by seasonalScale when positive. At zero scale return value zero and defined false.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| absoluteError | Absolute Error | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| seasonalScale | Seasonal Scale | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| defined | Whether the accompanying numeric result has an available denominator or required inputs. | Required. Boolean. |
| value | Value | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- The scale must be computed elsewhere using the intended seasonal convention; the undefined zero is a placeholder.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Check baseline suitability and aggregate losses on comparable observations before interpreting relative performance.
