Holdridge Life Zone Classifier

Actual independently established Holdridge biotemperature/precipitation log coordinates against caller same-triangle verified zones, PET/aridity transform/context externally established; no Köppen duplicate. Caller independently establishes matching units, evidence, method edition and applicability; output is not compliance, diagnosis, work-safety approval, geological identity or validated hazard prediction.

Description

A Holdridge-style life-zone diagram classifies a point within declared reference regions.

A Holdridge-style life-zone diagram classifies a point within declared reference regions.1

All points and polygons must already use the same adopted log-coordinate diagram.

When to use Holdridge Life Zone Classifier

Use this tool to calculate or review the supplied observations under the stated rules. Establish the observation method, units, averaging period and applicable reference or calibration.

How to use Holdridge Life Zone Classifier and understand its results

  1. Establish the observation method, units, averaging period and applicable reference or calibration.
  2. Enter observedLog2Precipitation, observedLog2Biotemperature, callerHoldridgeClassIds, callerSameTrianglePolygons, using the field meanings and rules below, then run the tool.
  3. Read matchingLifeZones, using the output meanings and calculation rules below.
  4. Correct any reported input issue and run again. Before using a successful result, check the stated units, signs, reference scope and observation coverage.
Input fieldMeaningValue typeRequirement

callerSameTrianglePolygonsCaller same triangle polygonsnumeric matrixRequired

Supply class IDs and polygon vertex rows [classIndex,x,y] using the same precomputed diagram coordinates as the query. IDs are unique and nonblank, at most 64; vertex rows are limited to 128. Vertices are grouped by class in their supplied order. Each polygon needs at least three distinct vertices, nonzero area and no crossing nonadjacent edges; a repeated closing vertex is removed. Ray casting tests the query, with exact boundary points included. Return every matching class in declared order, including overlaps; no match returns an empty list.

matchingClasses=[class_c where query is inside or exactly on boundary of callerPolygon_c]

Use the matching field units and the exact boundary, ordering and reference rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No built-in life-zone polygons, biotemperature computation, precipitation logarithm or PET transformation is supplied. Boundary comparisons use exact floating-point arithmetic without a tolerance.

Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types and violated rules return input issues. Numeric values and outputs must be finite. Lists and matrices must be dense, without missing cells. Numeric lists allow at most 10000 entries; ordinary string lists allow at most 128 strings of 128 UTF-16 units each; numeric matrices allow at most 128 rows and 128 columns, subject to narrower requirements above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

For a related step, use Koppen Climate Classification Code Lookup: Köppen codes summarize climates under a specified classification scheme. For a complementary comparison, use Albedo Surface Type Table Lookup: Albedo is a reflected fraction defined for particular illumination and observation conditions.
