Cap Strength CIN Checker

Audit maximum measured environmental-minus-parcel cap temperature excess and location against caller threshold; not integrated CIN or proof that convection cannot occur.

Description

A cap is a layer where environmental temperature exceeds a chosen parcel temperature.

A cap is a layer where environmental temperature exceeds a chosen parcel temperature. Its strongest temperature excess is a pointwise diagnostic rather than integrated energy.1

Audit maximum measured environmental-minus-parcel cap temperature excess and location against caller threshold; not integrated CIN or proof that convection cannot occur.

When to use Cap Strength CIN Checker

Use this tool to audit maximum measured environmental-minus-parcel cap temperature excess and location against caller threshold; not integrated CIN or proof that convection cannot occur.

Prepare the observed sounding, cloud records or forecast verification data. Check pressure and height coordinates, wind conventions and the stated units.

How to use Cap Strength CIN Checker and understand its results

  1. Prepare the observed sounding, cloud records or forecast verification data. Check pressure and height coordinates, wind conventions and the stated units.
  2. Enter heightsM, environmentTemperaturesC, parcelTemperaturesC, callerCapDifferenceThresholdC using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read maximumObservedCapTemperatureDifferenceC, firstMaximumCapHeightM, aboveCallerCapDifferenceThreshold. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
heightsMHeights mlist of numberRequired
environmentTemperaturesCEnvironment temperatures clist of numberRequired
parcelTemperaturesCParcel temperatures clist of numberRequired
callerCapDifferenceThresholdCCaller cap difference threshold cnumberRequired

Pair environmental/parcel Celsius temperatures with increasing heights and a nonnegative threshold. Return the maximum signed excess and the first height attaining it; flag only strict threshold exceedance. All-negative differences remain negative.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths. Each sequence checked for increasing order must contain at least two strictly increasing values.

cap excess = environmental T − parcel T; flag = maximum excess > threshold

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

This is not integrated CIN or proof that convection cannot occur.

Numeric inputs and returned numeric values must be finite; an unrepresentable returned value produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use CIN Convective Inhibition: Integrate only negative caller parcel virtual-buoyancy segments in bounded observed window, retaining signed CIN and magnitude; boundary choices/parcel lift are caller declared, not inferred complete sounding inhibition. For a complementary task, use CAPE Convective Available Potential Energy: Integrate positive portions of caller precomputed virtual parcel/environment buoyancy in observed height window, resolving each linear zero crossing; no hidden parcel lift, full sounding CAPE outside coverage or storm safety.
