Respiratory Exchange Ratio
Classify respiratory exchange ratio against caller-provided fuel bands.
Description
Respiratory exchange ratio divides measured carbon-dioxide output by oxygen uptake.
Respiratory exchange ratio divides measured carbon-dioxide output by oxygen uptake. Caller bands supply the interpretation labels in this simplified screen.1
Classify respiratory exchange ratio against caller-provided fuel bands.
When to use Respiratory Exchange Ratio
Use this tool to classify respiratory exchange ratio against caller-provided fuel bands.
Prepare the measured profile, formula counts, upstream model outputs or caller-defined reference criteria requested. Keep paired entries aligned and units, sample basis and preprocessing consistent.
How to use Respiratory Exchange Ratio and understand its results
- Prepare the measured profile, formula counts, upstream model outputs or caller-defined reference criteria requested. Keep paired entries aligned and units, sample basis and preprocessing consistent.
- Enter co2OutputLiters, oxygenUptakeLiters, lowRerCutoff, highRerCutoff using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read rer, fuelClass. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| co2OutputLiters | Co 2 output liters | number | Required |
| oxygenUptakeLiters | Oxygen uptake liters | number | Required |
| lowRerCutoff | Low rer cutoff | number | Required |
| highRerCutoff | High rer cutoff | number | Required |
Enter nonnegative CO2, positive oxygen and ordered finite cutoffs using compatible volume/time bases. Return ratio and class; both boundaries are included in mixed.
RER=VCO2/VO2; below low→fat-leaning; above high→carbohydrate-leaning; otherwise mixed Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| rer | Rer | number |
| fuelClass | Fuel class | string |

The labels do not establish actual fuel oxidation, clinical status or steady state. No universal cutoffs or physiological corrections are embedded.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
