Baseline Noise Snr
Estimate baseline noise and signal-to-noise from a sampled segment.
Description
Baseline-noise S/N compares a peak height above the baseline mean with baseline population standard deviation.
Baseline-noise S/N compares a peak height above the baseline mean with baseline population standard deviation. This differs from peak-to-peak noise conventions.1
Estimate baseline noise and signal-to-noise from a sampled segment.
When to use Baseline Noise Snr
Use this tool to estimate baseline noise and signal-to-noise from a sampled segment.
Prepare the measured profile, formula counts, upstream model outputs or caller-defined reference criteria requested. Keep paired entries aligned and units, sample basis and preprocessing consistent.
How to use Baseline Noise Snr and understand its results
- Prepare the measured profile, formula counts, upstream model outputs or caller-defined reference criteria requested. Keep paired entries aligned and units, sample basis and preprocessing consistent.
- Enter baselineIntensities, peakHeight using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read baselineMean, noiseStdDev, signalToNoise. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| baselineIntensities | Baseline intensities | list of number | Required |
| peakHeight | Peak height | number | Required |
Enter at least two finite baseline points with nonzero variation and finite peak height. Return baseline mean, noise deviation and signed S/N.
SNR=(peakHeight−meanBaseline)/sqrt(Σ(baseline−mean)²/n) Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| baselineMean | Baseline mean | number |
| noiseStdDev | Noise std dev | number |
| signalToNoise | Signal to noise | number |

No baseline-region selection, peak fitting or noise convention conversion is performed.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Detection Limit: Estimate LOD from a measured standard concentration and target signal-to-noise ratio. For a complementary task, use Peak FWHM: Interpolate chromatographic full width at half maximum.
