Description
Subtract active and reserved from limit for headroom.
Capacity accounting compares available supply with commitments, reservations, or demand. Negative residuals can expose overload while zero capacity requires a distinct undefined utilization state.
Subtract active and reserved from limit for headroom.
When to use this tool
Use Work In Progress Limit Headroom when you need a transparent resource or workload capacity term.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter active, limit, reserved. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read headroom, overLimit. Inspect overLimit before interpreting the associated values.
Subtract active and reserved from limit for headroom. Set overLimit only when their sum strictly exceeds limit.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| active | Active | Required. Safe integer; minimum 0. |
| limit | Limit | Required. Safe integer; minimum 0. |
| reserved | Reserved | Required. Safe integer; minimum 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| headroom | Headroom | Required. Safe integer. |
| overLimit | Over Limit | Required. Boolean. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Counts are nonnegative integers; zero headroom is allowed and no workflow policy or work-item weight is inferred.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Validate calendars, skill constraints, and concurrent demand with the actual resource plan.
