IPA Vowel Height/Backness Classifier
Resolve 28 supported plain standard IPA vowel symbols to chart height/backness/rounding descriptors; explicit tokens required, unsupported diacritics/compound vowels are rejected, not silently stripped.
Description
The IPA vowel chart describes height, backness and rounding.
When to use IPA Vowel Height/Backness Classifier
Use IPA Vowel Height/Backness Classifier when you need to evaluate the supplied records under the calculation and evidence rules below. Diacritics, diphthongs and unsupported symbols are rejected rather than stripped. No audio classification is performed.
Prepare explicit text tokens, annotated language observations, caller mappings or a supported locale as requested. Preserve source evidence and the stated Unicode counting convention.
How to use IPA Vowel Height/Backness Classifier and understand its results
- Prepare explicit text tokens, annotated language observations, caller mappings or a supported locale as requested. Preserve source evidence and the stated Unicode counting convention.
- Enter plainIpaVowelTokens using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read vowelHeightLabels, vowelBacknessLabels, roundedVowelFlags. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| plainIpaVowelTokens | Plain ipa vowel tokens | list of string | Required |
Enter nonempty list of supported plain IPA vowel tokens. Resolve28 chart symbols and return aligned height/backness labels and binary rounded flags.
lookup exact supported symbol→height/backness/rounding Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| vowelHeightLabels | Vowel height labels | list of string |
| vowelBacknessLabels | Vowel backness labels | list of string |
| roundedVowelFlags | Rounded vowel flags | list of number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Diacritics, diphthongs and unsupported symbols are rejected rather than stripped. No audio classification is performed.
Numeric inputs, where present, must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 10,000 entries; string lists to 128 strings of at most 128 characters each. The rules above may impose smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use IPA Consonant Place-Manner Grid Lookup: Plain IPA consonants can be described by place, manner and voicing. Compound or modified tokens require additional analysis. For a complementary task, use X-SAMPA to IPA Converter: X-SAMPA represents phonetic symbols in ASCII. Explicit tokens prevent ambiguity between multicharacter symbols and adjacent sounds.
