Methane Bubbling Emission Estimate

Normalize trap-measured bubble methane by dry-gas ideal-law correction and summed area×time; negative blank-corrected estimates are preserved as nondetection evidence, not clamped emissions.

Description

Bubble traps collect gas over a known area and exposure time.

Bubble traps collect gas over a known area and exposure time. A dry-gas ideal-law correction converts blank-corrected methane volume into moles before area-time normalization.1

The tool returns blankCorrectedMethaneMoles, methaneFluxGramsPerM2Day. The computation uses supplied observations and parameters rather than acquiring measurements.

When to use Methane Bubbling Emission Estimate

Use this for the following task: Normalize trap-measured bubble methane by dry-gas ideal-law correction and summed area×time; negative blank-corrected estimates are preserved as nondetection evidence, not clamped emissions. Prepare observations and calibration parameters on the same unit and reporting basis.

How to use Methane Bubbling Emission Estimate and understand its results

  1. Prepare the measured quantities and supplied model parameters. Match the units and align paired lists before calculating.
  2. Enter trapGasVolumesLiters, blankGasVolumesLiters, methaneMoleFractions, trapAreasM2, deploymentDays, gasPressurePa, waterVaporPressurePa, gasTemperatureKelvin, gasConstantPaM3PerMoleK, methaneMolarMassGramsPerMole according to the field table, then run the tool.
  3. Read blankCorrectedMethaneMoles, methaneFluxGramsPerM2Day. Use the calculation below to interpret the selected mean or the model’s signs, units and comparison flags.
  4. Review the supplied assumptions and calibration before comparing or reporting the result.

Supply aligned volumes, methane fractions in [0,1], positive trap areas and deployment days, and positive gas constants and Kelvin temperature. Require pressure above vapor pressure.

methane moles=Σ((trapLiters−blankLiters)×moleFraction/1000)×(pressure−vaporPressure)/(R×temperature); flux=moles×molarMass/Σ(area×days)

The symbols and boundary conditions refer to the supplied fields and the implementation described above.

Limitations and assumptions

Negative blank-corrected flux is retained as evidence near nondetection. The result covers captured bubbling only and does not infer dissolved-gas exchange or lake-wide spatial representativeness.

Numerical inputs must be finite. Input-shape and calculation checks do not establish measurement quality or the validity of a supplied calibration.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Choose Piston Velocity Gas Exchange when you need its operation: Scale a measured reference gas-transfer piston velocity by a supplied Schmidt-number power relation; does not infer wind dependence or gas concentration gradients. Choose CO2 Flux Atmosphere Lake for the complementary operation: Combine a caller Henry equilibrium with measured dissolved CO2 and piston velocity into signed atmosphere–lake flux; positive is emission, negative uptake, and carbonate speciation is external.
