Shelfmark Sort Component Tool

Extract one supplied shelfmark component under an explicit delimiter convention, without imposing a catalog classification.

Description

Split shelfmark by nonempty delimiter and return the valid zero-based componentIndex plus componentCount.

Catalog identifiers and labels follow local formatting conventions. Splitting or recognizing a token's shape preserves structure without establishing that its identifier or classification is valid.

Split shelfmark by nonempty delimiter and return the valid zero-based componentIndex plus componentCount.

When to use this tool

Use Shelfmark Sort Component when you need one explicit catalog-label parsing or formatting step.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter shelfmark, delimiter, componentIndex. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read component, componentCount. Use the output convention below.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Empty components are retained; no classification scheme or numeric sorting is inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult the cataloging scheme and source record before assigning semantic meaning or a filing order.
