Description
Subtract margins from spineHeight for availableHeight.
Linear storage capacity depends on the dimensions counted, spacing between items, and any reserved expansion. A total length may hide individual-item and structural constraints.
Subtract margins from spineHeight for availableHeight.
When to use this tool
Use Book Spine Label Line Budget when you need a supplied shelf, spine-label, or folder-space estimate.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter spineHeight, topMargin, bottomMargin, lineHeight, gap. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read availableHeight, lines. Use the output convention below.
Subtract margins from spineHeight for availableHeight. Fit lines with floor((availableHeight + gap) / (lineHeight + gap)), requiring positive lineHeight and nonnegative gap.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| spineHeight | Spine Height | Required. Finite number. |
| topMargin | Top Margin | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| bottomMargin | Bottom Margin | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| lineHeight | Line Height | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| gap | Signed difference under the stated subtraction order. | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| availableHeight | Available Height | Required. Finite number. |
| lines | Lines | Required. Safe integer. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Gap is counted only between lines; typography, wrapping, printer tolerances, and physical readability are not modeled.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Check physical dimensions, load capacity, and the storage or printing layout before using an aggregate budget.
