Wavebreaking Artifact Screen

Count significant local spectral peaks and flag excess splitting.

Description

A spectral splitting screen counts strict interior local maxima above an intensity threshold.

A spectral splitting screen counts strict interior local maxima above an intensity threshold. Extra peaks can motivate inspection, without identifying their physical cause.1

Count significant local spectral peaks and flag excess splitting.

When to use Wavebreaking Artifact Screen

Use this tool to count significant local spectral peaks and flag excess splitting.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use Wavebreaking Artifact Screen and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter spectralIntensities, minimumPeakIntensity, maximumExpectedPeakCount using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read detectedPeakCount, splittingArtifact. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
spectralIntensitiesSpectral intensity sampleslist of numberRequired
minimumPeakIntensityMinimum peak intensitynumber; minimum: 0Required
maximumExpectedPeakCountMaximum expected peaksinteger; minimum: 1Required

Enter at least three finite intensities, nonnegative threshold and integer expected maximum≥1. Ignore endpoints and flat-topped maxima. Return count and strict excess flag.

peak_i if y_i≥threshold AND y_i>both neighbors; artifact=count>maximum

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No smoothing, spectral coordinates or optical-wavebreaking diagnosis is performed; signed samples are accepted.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use THz Waveform Spectrum: Compute a direct discrete magnitude spectrum from a THz time-domain waveform. For a complementary task, use Supercontinuum Octave Span: Measure supercontinuum spectral span in frequency octaves.
