Synthetic Wavelength

Calculate the two-color synthetic wavelength for interferometric unwrapping.

Description

A two-color synthetic wavelength describes the larger period formed by wavelength beating.

A two-color synthetic wavelength describes the larger period formed by wavelength beating. It depends strongly on the separation of the two wavelengths.1

Calculate the two-color synthetic wavelength for interferometric unwrapping.

When to use Synthetic Wavelength

Use this tool to calculate the two-color synthetic wavelength for interferometric unwrapping.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use Synthetic Wavelength and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter firstWavelengthMeters, secondWavelengthMeters using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read syntheticWavelengthMeters. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
firstWavelengthMetersFirst wavelength (m)number; minimum: 0Required
secondWavelengthMetersSecond wavelength (m)number; minimum: 0Required

Enter nonnegative unequal wavelengths in meters. Return the synthetic wavelength; a zero wavelength is accepted and yields zero.

syntheticλ=λ1λ2/|λ1−λ2|

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No phase unwrapping or measurement uncertainty is evaluated. Physical optical wavelengths should be positive.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Swept-Frequency Distance: Convert swept-frequency phase slope to delay and one-way distance. For a complementary task, use Comb-Ranging Ambiguity: Calculate one-way frequency-comb ranging ambiguity distance.
