PBS Extinction

Calculate PBS extinction ratio, decibels, and leakage fraction.

Description

PBS extinction expresses desired-to-leaked power ratio and its logarithmic equivalent.

PBS extinction expresses desired-to-leaked power ratio and its logarithmic equivalent. Leakage fraction uses the sum of the two supplied channels.1

Calculate PBS extinction ratio, decibels, and leakage fraction.

When to use PBS Extinction

Use this tool to calculate PBS extinction ratio, decibels, and leakage fraction.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use PBS Extinction and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter transmittedSPower, leakedPPower using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read extinctionRatio, extinctionDb, leakageFraction. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
transmittedSPowerTransmitted S-polarized powernumber; minimum: 0Required
leakedPPowerLeaked P-polarized powernumber; minimum: 0Required

Enter nonnegative transmitted S and positive leaked P power. Use positive S to obtain a finite dB output. Return ratio, dB and leakage share.

ratio=S/P; dB=10log10(ratio); leakage=P/(S+P)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Zero S generates negative infinity and fails the output contract. No spectral calibration or other losses are measured.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Ring Isolation Ratio: Calculate forward/reverse isolation in a unidirectional ring cavity. For a complementary task, use Half-Wave Plate Polarization: Calculate ideal linear-polarization rotation through a half-wave plate.
