MZM Chirp

Estimate Mach–Zehnder modulator chirp from phase and power modulation.

Description

Small-signal MZM chirp compares phase modulation with an inferred field-amplitude modulation.

Small-signal MZM chirp compares phase modulation with an inferred field-amplitude modulation. Field modulation is taken as half fractional power modulation.1

Estimate Mach–Zehnder modulator chirp from phase and power modulation.

When to use MZM Chirp

Use this tool to estimate Mach–Zehnder modulator chirp from phase and power modulation.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use MZM Chirp and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter phaseModulationRadians, fractionalPowerModulation using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read fractionalFieldModulation, chirpParameter. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
phaseModulationRadiansMeasured phase modulation (rad)numberRequired
fractionalPowerModulationFractional optical-power modulationnumberRequired

Enter finite signed phase and nonzero finite fractional power modulation. Return both quantities.

fieldModulation=powerModulation/2; chirp=phase/fieldModulation

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No bias point, large-signal transfer function or frequency-dependent calibration is fitted.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Pockels-Cell Drive: Calculate Pockels-cell retardation and ideal crossed-polarizer transmission. For a complementary task, use Henry Alpha: Estimate the Henry linewidth-enhancement factor from wavelength and modal-gain changes.
