Double-Clad Area Ratio
Calculate circular inner-cladding to core area ratio and core area fraction.
Description
Double-clad geometric area ratio squares the ratio of circular diameters.
Double-clad geometric area ratio squares the ratio of circular diameters. Core fraction uses the reciprocal area ratio.1
Calculate circular inner-cladding to core area ratio and core area fraction.
When to use Double-Clad Area Ratio
Use this tool to calculate circular inner-cladding to core area ratio and core area fraction.
Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
How to use Double-Clad Area Ratio and understand its results
- Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
- Enter coreDiameterMicrometers, innerCladdingDiameterMicrometers using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read claddingToCoreAreaRatio, coreAreaFractionPercent. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| coreDiameterMicrometers | Core diameter (µm) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| innerCladdingDiameterMicrometers | Inner-cladding diameter (µm) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
Enter positive diameters in µm. Return area ratio and percent.
cladding/core=(dcladding/dcore)²; core%=100/ratio Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| claddingToCoreAreaRatio | Cladding-to-core area ratio | number; minimum: 0 |
| coreAreaFractionPercent | Core area fraction (%) | number; minimum: 0; maximum: 100 |

Cladding diameter below core diameter computes a fraction above 100% and fails the output contract. Pump overlap and actual noncircular geometry are excluded.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
