Comb–Cavity Tooth Match

Match a cavity resonance to the nearest frequency-comb tooth.

Description

Comb-tooth matching rounds a cavity frequency to the nearest offset-plus-integer-spacing tooth.

Comb-tooth matching rounds a cavity frequency to the nearest offset-plus-integer-spacing tooth. A half-linewidth interval supplies the inclusive match gate.1

Match a cavity resonance to the nearest frequency-comb tooth.

When to use Comb–Cavity Tooth Match

Use this tool to match a cavity resonance to the nearest frequency-comb tooth.

Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.

How to use Comb–Cavity Tooth Match and understand its results

  1. Prepare the optical measurements, geometry, fitted coefficients or caller-selected thresholds requested. Confirm wavelength, radius/diameter, pulse-width, angle and unit conventions before running the calculation.
  2. Enter cavityFrequencyHertz, combOffsetHertz, combRepetitionHertz, cavityLinewidthHertz using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read nearestToothIndex, nearestToothFrequencyHertz, detuningHertz, withinHalfLinewidth. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
cavityFrequencyHertzCavity resonance frequency (Hz)number; minimum: 0Required
combOffsetHertzComb offset frequency (Hz)number; minimum: 0Required
combRepetitionHertzComb repetition rate (Hz)number; minimum: 0Required
cavityLinewidthHertzCavity linewidth (Hz)number; minimum: 0Required

Enter nonnegative cavity frequency/offset/linewidth and positive repetition Hz. Return index, tooth frequency, signed detuning and inclusive absolute-detuning gate.

index=round((cavity−offset)/rate); tooth=offset+index×rate; detuning=tooth−cavity

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Negative tooth indexes are accepted, but a computed negative tooth frequency fails the output contract. JavaScript rounding determines half-step ties; no dispersion or mode assignment is fitted.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Fabry-Pérot Linewidth: Calculate Fabry–Pérot free spectral range and linewidth from cavity length, index, and finesse. For a complementary task, use Comb Spacing Lock: Summarize gain-switched comb spacing lock error.
